Wompoo Eco Retreat is a peaceful and private escape set on 2.5 rainforest hectares elevated on a hillside with breathtaking views over Thornton Peak, Cape Tribulation and the Coral Sea.  The accommodation is designed to capture the cool tropical sea breezes.

Wompoo is ideally located on 5 acres of beautiful mix of rain forest and open space close to the protected beach, Cow Bay beach, as well as numerous fresh waterholes, creeks, mangroves and rainforest boardwalks. It is also convenient location to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree River. The property features two bungalows, both of which are private and independent, and share similar design features and guest amenities.

Rammed earth was used in the construction of the bungalows to optimise a cool interior and to tailor expansive Daintree Range views from the comfort of the guest bedroom and bathroom.  Each bungalow has private undercover decking with seating and self-contained cooking facilities.

Plenty of lush rainforest on the property provides quiet nooks as well as open space for enjoying our diverse local wildlife. Guests can enjoy the tranquillity of the meandering rainforest creek as a refreshing welcome retreat into the wild.

Wompoo Eco Retreat’s name is inspired by the local presence of  the Wompoo Fruit Dove, a beautiful dove with an amazing purple breast, green, yellow and white markings.  This bird has a very unusual call, and listening to the Wompoo is like hearing to a human conversation, but muted and distant.

Rambutan Bungalow

Enjoy a laidback rainforest escape with panoramic views over the Daintree range. Featuring an inviting outdoor entertaining area, the Rambutan Bungalow also provides guests with a tranquil outdoor bath area surrounded by mother nature.

Mangosteen Bungalow

Mangosteen Bungalow is elevated to capture a truly unique and immersive view of the mountain ranges. Guests enjoy a truly immersive rainforest experience with al fresco cooking and entertaining facilities, a peaceful sitting area, as well as a private outdoor bath.

The Daintree

Wompoo Eco Retreat is ideally situated to provide guests with easy access to both remote beaches and rainforest sections of the Daintree.  Boardwalks, beach walks, interpretive centres, guided walks, river cruises and reef trips are all a stones throw away.

“This was our third trip to Far North Queensland, and our first to Wompoo Retreat. Living in London means our next trip is unlikely to be any time soon, but whenever it is, we will plan it based on availability at Wompoo Retreat. That’s how good a place it is. Jill and Peter are a friendly couple who provide a warm welcome and excellent local knowledge, and who have created a living space for their guests that is really quite special. It is secluded, peaceful and private, and everything about it immerses you in the beauty of the environment - showering (using Jill’s handmade soap) in the inside/outside bathroom with stunning rainforest views, cooking and dining in the open air, using the provided books and binoculars to watch and identify the many species of visiting birds (the pair of double-eyed fig parrots who came to work on their developing nest every morning while we ate the breakfast provided by Jill and Peter was a particular joy), sitting outside on a clear night watching the landscape darken and the stars brighten...if I had to sum up Wompoo Retreat in a few words, I would say that it is simplicity of the highest quality. We loved every single moment of our time there.”

This place is an absolute gem - an open bathroom plus an outdoor hot tub that overlook the gorgeous daintree sunset , it was beyond heavenly. Rooms are very clean and have a homely feel to them. Perhaps most importantly, the hosts Jill and Peter are incredibly accommodating and always have a smile on their face. Don’t forget to have a dip in the creek 100 m away, guaranteed to have it all to yourself. Lovely.
